In the Studio with Zavoloka:

Waldorf Protein & Experimental Music from Ukraine

Zavoloka (Kateryna Zavoloka) is a Ukrainian-born composer, sound artist, performer, and visual artist based in Berlin whose work stands outside genre boundaries, offering what she describes as timeless and experimental music from Ukraine.

Her works stem from a very strong conceptual base and creative freedom. She’s a multidisciplinary artist whose creations hint at deep artistic research that often combines traditional and synthesized elements.

“Since the beginning, as a kid, I was interested in Ukrainian traditional music. […] First, I would travel to some villages and record old Ukrainian traditional songs from common people in there. Somehow, all the time, since I began to make music, it was really clear that I wanted to make experimental music from Ukraine. This was a clear statement for myself […] to understand what I wanted to do.” — Zavoloka

Kateryna’s presence in the artistic field is vast. Aside from her hypnotic live audiovisual performances, she takes part in cross-genre art projects and is renowned for her visual art creations, cover artworks, and graphic designs. In parallel, she also co-runs with Dmytro Fedorenko the experimental music label Prostir and its sublabel I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free, as well as the band Cluster Lizard.

Waldorf Music first came across Zavoloka after she shared her thoughts on her Blofeld and Quantum synthesizers in an interview. We got to know each other, and our conversations easily turned into a collaboration. She was one of the first persons trying out Waldorf’s Protein synthesizer, and the first artist to play it live at its release event we organized in Morphine Records in Berlin the 27/11/2025.

We took the opportunity to visit her in her studio the day after the event and, after a very tasty homemade cake, had a nice talk about her work and creative perspective.

In Ukrainian, Zavoloka means “fog,” and like fog that diffuses the contours of things, her music resists classification. Yet this becomes secondary, because, as with fog, what will truly move you is the atmosphere, the mood that lingers long after her sound fades.

With great pleasure, we simply suggest you listen to her.

“The sounds that I created with the new Wavetable Protein synthesizer, which I also used in the live performance, are inspired by Ukrainian folk musical instruments—strings, winds, and idiophones—but with the intention to create a unique contemporary sonic palette with a spirit. Multi-layered or simple—airy, light, lush, strong, and intense.” — Zavoloka
