simulating press + hold of Play/Shift button via Sysex

I have another thread going here that travels down a rabbit hole, really the crux of what I'm trying to figure out is how to simulate the press & hold of the red Shift/Play button.

Section 2.71 RMTP on Page 110 of the XT/II/XTk manual states that a value of 0 for the 6th byte (MM) indicates a button release, while values 1-127 send a button press.

Taken at face value this seems to say that sending the synth the following Sysex:
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 05 01 7F F7"

would simulate a press & hold of the red shift/play button until is sent to "release" the button.
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 05 00 7F F7"

However sending the synth:

"F0 3E 0e 00 26 05 01 7F F7" (press Shift/Play button)
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 07 01 7F F7" (press soundpar 2/Recall button)
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 05 00 7F F7" (release Shift/Play button)

Does not recall a program on the synth.

Does anybody know how to simulate the press & hold of the Shift/Play button?

I have tried via code sending a loop of sending values MM=1-127 for the 6th byte of the following:
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 05 MM 7F F7"
while also sending they synth:
"F0 3E 0e 00 26 07 01 7F F7" (press soundpar 2/Recall button)
but it does also does not recall a program on the synth.

I've been stumped on this for quite some time. I thought for sure the loop was what the synth was looking for since values 1-127 work for button press.
